The USS Maine was a "second class Battleship," this meant that it was a strong and sturdy ship with good weapons. The part that makes it a second class was that it wasn't as luxurious and had more faults.
When America heard of the rebellion we sent The Maine to help support the rebellion in Cuba in January 1898. At the time, 266 men were on board the ship. A few men died of sickness, but somthing bigger would shock the country, and the outcome to the world. On Febuary 15, 21:40 (9:40pm) three weeks after it left port, it exploded into flames. The cause was unknown at the time. It mysteriously blew up into sharp shreds of metal. Of the 266 men aboard, only 86 survived.
The journalist wrote down what they thought it was, "SPANISH ATTACKED USS MAINE, WE WANT WAR!"
When America read this headline the next morning, we did what we belived in. America wanted war! Congress now had the President's word that he would not block a
war with Spain. On April 24, 1898 Spain declared war on the US. The next day, on April 25, the US declared war on Spain.
